MPA in Venice
The Lagoon as a Classroom
E.C.O. and the University of Klagenfurt have been overseeing the MSc course “Management of Protected Areas” since 2005. At the invitation of UNESCO, the latest module of the course was held at the Palazzo Zorzi in Venice. Participants had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the system of the lagoon. At present, a management plan is being developed for this impressive natural and cultural heritage site.
The course participants gained valuable insights into one of the world’s most complex management planning processes. The outstanding natural and cultural heritage of the lagoon needs to be preserved in a bustling city that is subject to strong development pressure. Major technical challenges such as flooding, environmental pollution and high volumes of traffic have to be overcome. All in all, Venice was a highly stimulating classroom for students from eleven nations.
