Biodiversity Day at the Lower Lavant

More than 1,050 species recorded within 24 hours

In early July, around 60 researchers and nature enthusiasts spent 24 hours exploring the Natura 2000 site Untere Lavant between St. Andrä and Lavamünd as part of the GEO Day of Biodiversity. More than 1,050 species of animals, plants and fungi were recorded.

Biodiversity is particularly evident in the restored river sections near Aich. By restoring natural river dynamics, new habitats have been created for numerous rare species, including Black-crowned Night Heron, Blue-winged Grasshopper and Sharp Club-rush.

E.C.O. organised the event together with Ökoteam on behalf of Department 8 of the State of Carinthia and in cooperation with the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul im Lavanttal.
