Protection of Natural Zones at Lake Wörthersee
Consideration of natural areas during water sports activities
Lake Wörthersee is a popular destination for recreation seekers and also a vital habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. The last remaining larger natural shoreline zones are located near the heavily frequented leisure spots around the lake. These reed beds and water lily fields are essential refuges for wildlife. For over ten years, we have been providing ecological management for the Natura 2000 site Lendspitz-Maiernigg in the eastern bay, supported financially by Stadtwerke Klagenfurt (www.stw.at).
The "Fair am See" campaign highlights the importance of respecting these natural areas during water sports activities like boating and stand-up paddling. The campaign folder with the most important rules of conduct and information on the protection zones can be downloaded here and is available at the public bathing beach. The recently launched nature-themed treasure hunt at Klagenfurt beach bath, a project highlight too, especially delights young nature enthusiasts and invites them to explore the fascinating world of waterbirds.
