The Swiss mining company Holcim, which is active worldwide, is developing a globally practicable and cost-effective biodiversity monitoring concept for its sites together with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). E.C.O. analysed the established procedures and methods with regard to their cost-effectiveness, practicability and informative value, and tested their suitability for the global monitoring of mining sites. Suggestions for a monitoring system were compiled and will serve Holcim as a basis for decision making.
