Sustainable forestry. Focus on climate protection and biodiversity
In the course of this project, and together with our project partners Umweltbundesamt GmbH (UBA) and Bundesforschungszentrum für Wald (BFW), E.C.O. is investigating how biodiversity protection, climate change adaptation and the function of the forest as a greenhouse gas sink can be reconciled.
About half of Austria's forest area grows on spruce-fir-beech forest and beech forest sites. These forest types, which are important for Austria and Europe, are also the focus of this project. The project team is investigating how different tools (e.g. subsidies, strategies) contribute to climate change adaptation, biodiversity and climate protection.
Talking with forest owners and decision makers from the realms of politics, administration and economy, concrete recommendations for action are being developed to support the conversion to climate-friendly forests and to fulfil different ecological and economic requirements in the best possible way.
