Wildlife management in Ethiopia. Establishment of a national monitoring strategy using satellite-based technology

The project aims to establish a national wildlife monitoring strategy for protected areas in Ethiopia, using the example of four different national parks for a later up-scaling. The set-up of a national monitoring strategy requires the alignment with state-of-the-art monitoring approaches, latest technologies and standardised methods. Remote sensing and satellite-based technologies are playing an increasingly important role, particularly in ecological monitoring, as they make it possible to detect changes on a large scale and also in remote areas. As far as possible, new technologies will be considered that complement the classical methods of field work for monitoring. A concerted effort to develop a common strategy taking into account the needs of individual protected areas is an ambitious but necessary step towards an efficient monitoring system that is useful for individual park management as well as for the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Agency (EWCA) and national administration to have a permanent overview of the current state of biodiversity.
