The Carnic Alps are worldwide known for their famous fossil sites from many different geological periods. Therefore, a nomination of the Austrian part of the mountain range as UNESCO World Heritage is being considered. To assess the suitability of this region for a World Heritage nomination, the management of the Geopark Carnic Alps commissioned E.C.O. with a feasibility study. Based on a specifically designed set of criteria, the chances and difficulties of a nomination were evaluated and rated. E.C.O. developed recommendations and a time frame, summing up the possibilities and chances of a nomination of the Carnic Alps as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
