The Cultural Landscapes of the Austrian Nature Parks

In order to safeguard consistent strategic further development of the Austrian nature park network, it became necessary to establish technically based principles, so in 2003 the Association of Austrian Nature Parks commissioned this project. The focus of the work lay in the analysis of the nature parks which were already in existence. We studied to what extent they represented the various different types of cultural landscape in Austria. The safeguarding and development of characteristic landscapes is a basic function of nature parks. The analysis of cultural landscapes provided information as to whether the Austrian nature park network fulfilled this task sufficiently, or whether there was still room for improvement.
