Due to the large number of national and international categories of protected areas, even conservation experts have difficulty in maintaining an overview of the focal content, the objectives or legal basis of the individual categories. The task we had to resolve in this project was to create this overview and enable the various categories of protected areas to be compared. In doing this, particular attention was to be paid to the categories of protected areas which have been designated in Carinthia. We researched and described the respective protected areas, objectives and conditions, and illustrated these by means of examples. The outcomes are a website (http://www.schutzgebiete.ktn.gv.at) and the brochure “Protected areas in Carinthia – guidance system”. These outline international and national categories of protected areas in a format aimed at the interested layman.
