Discontinued use of land for farming and the associated loss of valuable plant populations pose major challenges to nature conservation throughout the Alpine region. The “Nature conservation plan for the Alpine pasture” represents an important instrument of contractual nature conservation which will enable the long-term conservation of the quality of the Alpine pastures as a natural region. Selected areas have been digitised on an orthophoto basis and amalgamated in a standardised plan. A conservation concept for these areas is being developed together with the farmers. When the nature conservation plans from 2010 were carried forward into 2011, a preservation and maintenance concept for a further 21 Alpine pastures was developed.
